EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN

ROUROME

Python, ChatGPT, Photoshop, Illustrator, Blender, C4D

This is an experimental graphic design project for a hypothetical fruit brand, ROUROMUE. The process was guided by machine learning models and showcases how designers and AI can collaborate on creative projects.

More details and design process below.
The concept of this brand’s main product revolves around a fruit called the Sunburst Berry, whose description was generated by ChatGPT. It features bright yellow, glossy skin reminiscent of bananas, with seeds clustered and arranged in a pattern resembling sun rays.

The brand name, ROUROMUE, was selected from logos generated by the Stable Diffusion model. Instead of a single logo, the brand’s identity is represented by a collection of logos displayed as stickers on the surface of the berry. Initial logo sketches were generated by the model based on the brand name and then refined by me, a human designer.
These refined designs were further processed using a customized Pix2Pix model, trained on a dataset of fruit sticker designs. I completed the modeling, styling, and final visuals for the product. The inspiration for this project and its workflow comes from Fizuy-Lub, a project that uses AI in co-pilot mode. If we as designers are only required to create pastiche and repetitive work, perhaps we can leave that to automation and lighten our load.

However, this project raised several questions for me: Where do we as designers stand in this process? What will our relationship with AI be? How will people perceive AI-assisted work compared to traditionally designed products? And how do we, as designers, see ourselves in this cooperative relationship?
We build AI systems from their conception, feeding them data with the ultimate goal of understanding our minds and vision—predicting what we expect or don’t expect. Yet, visual elements like images are "remarkably slippery things, laden with multiple potential meanings, irresolvable questions, and contradictions." In this project, I aim to create a work where both humans and AI are striving to understand each other.

Despite AI’s capabilities, what sets us apart as humans is our ability to build connections from seemingly random and unrelated things, drawing from personal experiences and interactions with people, objects, and the world. In this project, I position myself as the human asset, creating these unique connections based on the machine’s output.
